Are there any contraindications
to hairdressing?

In our experience, YES!
A regular client had been coming in for four years, each time asking to have her hair coloured what we can only describe as orange! She insisted that this was her natural colour, we tried to gently persuade her otherwise, but alas, to no avail. Then one day, she came in, asked for the same colour, and we did her bidding, however, when she saw the colour, she was hysterical, horrified, aghast... we were stunned - it was exactly as we'd done for the past four years. After calming her down we discovered that the week before, she 'd had her cataracts removed...!

The moral of the story is,
please, please tell us if you
have cataracts!!

Hair Care Tips...

GREASY HAIR
Try to avoid daily washing. The sebaceous glands become overstimulated, secreting more grease onto the hair. This creates a vicious cycle where the more you wash it the greasier it becomes.

Although the roots are greasy, the rest of your hair doesn't have enough oil so the ends become dry and brittle with regular washing. Try using a mild ph-balanced shampoo and avoid rubbing your scalp too much when you wash your hair. Apply conditioner to the middle and ends, avoiding the roots.

Diet: Fatty, oily foods can exacerbate greasy skin and scalp. When you can, give your hair a rest from daily washing.

DRY HAIR
Nourish dry, brittle or coarse hair from within. Use an intensive moisturising shampoo that will cleanse without the need for excessive rubbing (which creates further damage) then follow with a hot oil conditioner, which will open up the hair cuticles and allow the moisturiser to penetrate the hair shaft, giving it more suppleness and volume. Avoid mousse as this can give a dull look - try blow drying or thickening lotion instead.

FRIZZY HAIR
Use a rich moisturising product to help keep your hair well conditioned. The right hairstyle will also help, for instance, too many layers will contribute more ‘frizz'. Choose long layers to add weight and volume. Blow dry with a diffuser to help control the frizz and retain volume.

SPLIT ENDS
Once hair has split, the damage is done. The only solution is to have the ends cut off. In the meantime, protect the ends with a leave-in moisturising conditioner and use a serum when applying direct heat, such as from curling tongs or heated rollers. Blow drying can also cause damage so use a nozzle on your hairdryer and concentrate on the hair shaft.

THIN HAIR
Thin hair can be disguised with a good cut - your hair stylist can help you choose a style that suits your face shape, i.e. not too long and shaped into the neck. There are a various products that may also help, such as thickening shampoos, and blow drying lotions to help control flyaway static hair – ask for details.

HAIR LOSS
After a birth, new mums may find their hair has thinned, this is quite normal and should return to normal within six months. Stress is also a known cause of hair loss. For hair loss, follow the ‘thin hair' tips above.
